Gymdesk vs Zen Planner for martial arts gyms (2026)
The two most-installed platforms in martial arts, compared on the bills they actually produce, the belts they actually track and what their reviewers say.
The short version: this is the title fight of martial arts gym software, the number one and number two most-installed platforms in our 5,191-site crawl, and the verdict splits clean. Pick Gymdesk for one simple bill with a website included, $250 a month configured at 150 members. Pick Zen Planner for the deepest belt testing in the market and accept the module bill, $367 configured, $616 with marketing, as of August 2026. Below: the bills, the belts, the reviews and the gap neither one covers.
The two incumbents, by the numbers
In our August 2026 crawl of 5,191 martial arts gym websites, Gymdesk was the most-detected platform and Zen Planner the second, together holding nearly half of all identifiable installs, with Zen Planner first among MMA gyms specifically. Most schools comparing this pair are not browsing the whole market; they are choosing between the two defaults, which is why this comparison gets its own page.
Their designs disagree about what an owner wants. Gymdesk sells one price per member-count band, $75 to $200 a month, everything included at every tier, website builder in the bundle, month to month. Zen Planner sells a core, $99 to $289 across eight member-count tiers, and the rest as modules: branded app $39, website $99, Engage marketing $249. One optimises for a bill you never think about; the other for a stack you assemble.
What the two bills look like configured
Price both the way a real 150-member school buys them, with a branded app and a website. Gymdesk: the $150 plan plus $100 for the app, website already included, $250 a month. Zen Planner: $229 core plus $39 app plus $99 website, $367 a month, and the Engage marketing suite would take it to $616. Full tier tables for both are in our Gymdesk pricing explained and Zen Planner pricing breakdowns.

The shape matters more than the totals. Gymdesk's bill moves only when your member count crosses a band. Zen Planner's moves when your member count crosses a tier and when anyone in the building decides a module looks useful, which is how its invoices drift upward one demo at a time.
Belts and gradings, where Zen Planner earns its price
If gradings run your calendar, weight this section over the money. Zen Planner's belt testing is the genuine article: native rank tracking, testing events, promotion workflows refined over two decades of martial arts schools. It is the best reason to pay the module bill. Gymdesk's rank tracking is basic, workable for a single-art school with simple ladders, limiting for a multi-art academy where one student holds positions on two curricula. Between these two on this axis, Zen Planner wins comfortably.
Simplicity and the website, where Gymdesk earns its keep
Gymdesk's case is everything around the software: setup measured in days, a bill you can predict a year out, a website builder included at every tier so one vendor covers your whole web presence, and month-to-month billing with no exit fee. Its 4.8 Capterra rating across roughly 150 reviews leans on exactly this, ease of use, with limited customisation the recurring gripe, which is the fair price of simplicity.
What their reviewers argue about
The review platforms sharpen the split. Gymdesk, 4.8 on Capterra: people like running it, and the complaints ask for more flexibility, not less trouble. Zen Planner, 4.3 across 270 reviews: the support team is the most-praised thing about it, and the recurring negative is billing, including reviewers reporting charges after cancelling. Neither pattern is disqualifying, but they are different risks: with Gymdesk you risk wanting more than it does; with Zen Planner you risk the relationship souring at the exit. Whichever you choose, get contract and cancellation terms in writing on day one.
The gap neither one covers
Here is the part of the comparison nobody at either company will volunteer: neither platform tells you when a member is fading. Both record attendance; both can produce a report if you remember to run one; neither taps you on the shoulder to say a specific member has missed two weeks against her own normal while a message could still bring her back. Retention at both is a filing cabinet, not an alarm, and for most schools retention is worth more than any feature either side lists. The mechanics are in our gym member retention guide.
Disclosure, then, as always: Mat Track is ours, built around exactly that gap. Attendance alerts against each member's own 60-day pattern, multi-art rank ladders with criteria in the member app, the app included in every plan, $0 to 200 contacts, $99 Growth, $199 Pro, billed monthly, no platform transaction fees. It has no website builder, which Gymdesk includes, and its belt tooling is younger than Zen Planner's two decades. The one-to-one cases are on our Gymdesk switching page and Zen Planner switching page.
How to decide between Gymdesk and Zen Planner
Three questions settle it. Does your school live by gradings, with multiple ladders and formal testing events? Zen Planner, and budget honestly for the modules. Do you want one predictable bill and your website handled by the same vendor? Gymdesk, and accept basic ranks. Is your actual problem that members drift away unnoticed? Then neither is aimed at your problem, and the third option exists for a reason. Whichever way you go, the pricing pages are public on both sides, ours included at mattrackapp.com/gyms, so this is one comparison you can finish with a calculator rather than a sales call.
